Kenya's Nurses Sign Return-to-Work Deal, Ending 41-Day Strike

Kenya's nurses formally signed a return-to-work agreement with the Council of Governors on September 10, ending a 41-day strike that had disrupted public hospitals nationwide.
Under the deal, monthly risk allowances rise by 8,000 shillings and uniform allowances by 5,000 shillings, roughly $100 combined, with nurses ordered back to wards within 24 hours. The walkout began in late July over an unimplemented 2017 pay agreement, and Kenya's doctors' union withdrew its own strike threat once the settlement was signed.
The agreement restores services across public hospitals, though the new allowances aren't due for another review until 2027.
