Tanzania's New Mega Power Plant Comes Online

Dodoma — A 2,115-megawatt power plant built by an Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric was inaugurated in Tanzania on August 22, at a cost of roughly $2.9 billion. The facility now supplies about half of the country's electricity, marking one of the largest single additions to East African generating capacity in recent years.
The project underscores deepening Egyptian engineering and construction involvement in East African infrastructure, alongside continued interest from Ethiopia and Rwanda in similar partnerships; Uganda has yet to commit to comparable deals, according to regional reporting.
The plant's launch comes as intra-African capital flows into hard infrastructure continue to be tracked as a defining trend of the year, with analysts citing it alongside other continental energy and transport investments as evidence of accelerating South-South infrastructure financing.
