Sudan War Enters Fourth Year as International Pressure Mounts

KHARTOUM — Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ("Hemedti") continues with no negotiated settlement in sight.
At a UN Security Council where an International Criminal Court's report on Darfur was discussed the Pakistani envoy Counsellor and Political Coordinator Gul Qaiser Sarwani expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian and security situation in Darfur. He cautioned any further escalation could result in more war crimes against the people in targeted areas. On July 15, the G7 foreign ministers and the European Union jointly called on the RSF to halt attacks around El-Obeid, while humanitarian organizations reported continued assaults on medical facilities and civilians across the country.
The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, has displaced millions and produced one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. Recent reports document continued fighting across Darfur, Kordofan, and other regions, while Amnesty International has accused the RSF of committing crimes against humanity during operations in El Fasher. International mediation efforts have yet to secure a lasting ceasefire.
Sudan's future cannot be secured through military victory alone. Rebuilding the country will require accountable institutions, civilian leadership, and an African-led peace process capable of restoring national unity while preventing external interests from prolonging a conflict that continues to exact an immense human cost.
