Nigeria's VP Shettima Opens UN General Assembly Push for Global Reform

Nigeria - Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to lead Nigeria's delegation to the 81st UN General Assembly in place of President Bola Tinubu. The delegation includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and senior ministers.
Shettima said Nigeria's engagement at this year's Assembly will be "guided by national interest" while backing multilateral cooperation, and called for global institutions to become "more representative, equitable, and responsive to the realities of today." The delegation's agenda centers on reform of international financial systems, expanded climate finance, wider technology access, and stronger African representation in global decision-making bodies.
The push reflects a broader position shared across African governments heading into this year's Assembly: that the postwar institutions still setting the rules for trade, finance and climate were not built with the continent's current weight in mind. What, if anything, Nigeria's delegation secures on these points over the coming days of General Assembly sessions will be the real test of the visit.
