Mogadishu Clashes Erupt Over Neighborhood Demolitions

Mogadishu — Clashes broke out this week between Somali government forces and residents after authorities began demolishing homes in Mogadishu's Tookiyo neighborhood. The confrontation adds to a volatile domestic security picture as the government pursues urban redevelopment in contested areas of the capital.
The unrest comes as Somalia grapples with a resurgence in piracy off its coast, which has climbed to its highest level in a decade — 13 incidents recorded in the first seven months of 2026, compared with eight for all of 2024 and five in 2025, according to regional intelligence tracking.
Analysts monitoring the Horn of Africa say the combination of domestic displacement disputes and rising maritime insecurity is straining Mogadishu's capacity to manage overlapping crises simultaneously, even as the AU-backed stabilization mission continues operating in the country.
