ACCRA, Ghana — Ghana has postponed planned high-level bilateral talks with South Africa following recent attacks on foreign African nationals that claimed the life of a Ghanaian citizen. The decision comes amid heightened diplomatic engagement between the two governments as officials seek assurances over the safety of Ghanaians living in South Africa.
President John Mahama condemned the killing and called for justice, while South African authorities pledged to investigate the violence and address growing concerns over attacks targeting migrants from other African countries. The incident has renewed debate across the continent about migration, employment, and the protection of African citizens exercising their right to live and work beyond their national borders.
The attacks highlight one of the greatest obstacles facing continental integration. African unity depends not only on agreements between governments but also on the security, dignity, and equal treatment of Africans wherever they reside on the continent. Strengthening solidarity, protecting freedom of movement, and confronting the economic conditions that fuel xenophobia remain essential to the broader project of African liberation.
