Ethiopia has inaugurated its first gold refinery, a $50 million joint venture intended to establish the country as a regional centre for precious-metal processing. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the project, which will process gold from Ethiopia and potentially neighbouring countries. State-owned Ethiopian Investment Holdings holds a majority stake.

Gold is one of Ethiopia's principal sources of foreign exchange, generating $5.6 billion in export earnings last year, according to government figures cited by Reuters. The refinery will provide melting, testing, refining, casting, certification and gold-bar production services. The government intends to attract regional mining businesses that currently send gold outside Africa for processing.

The investment addresses a longstanding structural issue in African commodity economies: the export of raw materials and subsequent import of higher-value processed products. Domestic refining could retain more technical expertise, employment and economic value within Ethiopia while creating infrastructure that serves neighbouring countries. Its ultimate impact will depend on processing capacity, access to regional markets and the extent to which mineral revenues support broader industrial development.
