Bahamas Joins Regional Push Against Illicit Firearms Trafficking

NASSAU, The Bahamas — The Bahamas' Ministry of National Security this week hosted a firearms trafficking workshop in partnership with the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security and the United States' Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. National Security Minister Wayne Munroe's ministry organized the training to strengthen officials' ability to trace illegal firearms and build cases capable of succeeding in court.
A ministry spokesperson said gun violence remains a persistent reality across the Caribbean, with the region continuing to record among the highest homicide rates in the world. Officials stressed that no single Caribbean state can dismantle firearms trafficking networks alone, underscoring the need for coordinated regional and international cooperation.
The workshop extends a broader CARICOM IMPACS initiative addressing the illicit arms trade, which regional officials have identified as a primary driver of gang violence and organized crime across member states. Similar regional training sessions are expected to continue in the coming months as CARICOM works to operationalize a dedicated Crime Gun Intelligence Unit.
