AU Heads of State to Convene in Luanda on Conflict Prevention

Luanda — The African Union will hold its 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly in Luanda, Angola, on August 29–30, focused on strengthening continental mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution. The summit, to be held at the Luanda Convention Palace, will bring together heads of state and government to review how the AU responds to instability across the continent.
The gathering follows a year in which the Commission has navigated border disputes, including talks over demarcation issues among Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and continued engagement around security operations in Somalia through the AU Support and Stabilization Mission. Officials describe the Luanda summit as a chance to consolidate lessons from these episodes into stronger institutional response mechanisms.
The AU says journalists will be able to cover open sessions both in person and via a dedicated virtual link, with a detailed agenda to be released ahead of the summit. The meeting is widely seen as a test of the Union's capacity to act decisively on continental security under Agenda 2063's peace and stability pillar.
