The African Union has launched the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) in Mauritius, establishing a continent-wide institution intended to produce independent assessments of African sovereigns, sub-sovereigns and companies. The AU says the agency is designed to address information gaps and provide Africa-focused assessments in international financial markets.

The initiative responds to longstanding African concerns about the way international credit-rating systems assess sovereign risk and the resulting cost of borrowing. The African Development Bank's 2026 economic outlook has likewise identified stronger African financial architecture, integrated capital markets and new approaches to sovereign-risk assessment as important elements of reducing financing constraints.

The significant question is how an African rating institution can alter how African risk is actually priced, rather than simply providing another assessment alongside the established agencies. If investors accept its methodology and ratings, AfCRA could become part of a broader attempt to increase African control over the financial infrastructure through which the continent's governments and businesses are valued and financed.
